Science

The emphasis of Science in the Nippers is on practical work and fun so that children can develop an enthusiastic interest in this very important area of the curriculum.

Science at the Nippers

Where possible the children learn from first hand experience and experiments so that they can acquire scientific skills as well facts. They progress from making observations to carrying out simple experiments and then eventually to designing their own investigations by forming and testing their own hypotheses and drawing conclusions from their findings.

The Science syllabus follows the national guidelines laid down in the 5-14 curriculum. From Years 1 to 5 Science is included as part of topic work in Environmental Studies together with Social Subjects (History and Geography) and Technology. Science is the main focus for some of these topics and a minor focus for others. Some topics do not focus on Science at all but over the academic year there is an equal emphasis given to all the various components of Environmental Studies for each class.

Examples of topics involving Science include:

  • Light, sound and magnetism
  • Our weather
  • The senses
  • Our local area
  • Rainforest
  • Water
  • Living things
  • Pollution and the environment
  • Space
  • Transport
  • Things we eat
  • Houses and homes

In Years 6 and 7 Science is taught as a separate subject.
