About Loretto Junior School
Loretto Junior School, affectionately known as The Nippers, is a special place. It is East Lothian’s leading independent Junior School for children aged 5–12 years. We are a small, friendly school, big on heart and big on ambition with about 200 boys and girls. The Early Year (5 - 7 years) is based at Eskbank and the Nippers (8 - 12 years) at North Esk Lodge. It occupies a site to the west of the River Esk, close enough to the Senior School to share its facilities but separate enough to allow its pupils to feel secure and happy in their own independent environment. The Loretto Nursery (0 - 5 years) is also located close by.
The School has always enjoyed the distinct advantages of being a small school conveniently located close to Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city. Here is a community where every individual matters, a school which offers the space and opportunity for everyone to find their own route to success – whether in academic achievement, sport, art, music, drama or other activities, wherever their talents and interests lie. We are predominantly a day school but every year we welcome a number of boarders who join us aged 11.
The School’s size and campus enable pupils, aged 5–12, to enjoy the freedom of their childhood within a safe and caring environment. Small classes allow all children the chance to discover and develop their talents, whilst receiving maximum individual attention. The school’s busy hub is North Esk Lodge, which is for both day pupils and boarders.
We aim to be as flexible as possible, with the school day intended to fit in with parents’ busy schedules. We run many school minibus routes to and from North Berwick, Gullane, Haddington, Gifford, Earlston, Galashiels, Edinburgh and Roslin .
