Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

Promoting the values of service and physical fitness, Loretto has a thriving CCF, with both a Royal Navy (RN) Section and an Army Section. Our disciplined programme enables young people to develop powers of leadership through learning basic military skills and training. Our cadets, girls and boys, develop the core values of courage, discipline, respect for others, Integrity, loyalty and selfless commitment.

All Fourth Form cadets initially join the Army Section in which they can choose to remain or join the RN Section in upper years. Cadets from Fifth and Sixth Forms can also complete Cadet Force Instructors Courses, Leadership, and Self Reliance Training, with the opportunity to take on a senior appointment within the contingent. Cadets who continue in the Upper Sixth assist in the instruction of all aspects of CCF to the younger cadets, and senior positions can be taken, including The Cadet Senior Under Officer and Cadet RSM-Army Section, Head of Navy Section, Dep and Watch Leaders. We have also introduced the Cadet Vocational Qualifications Organisation (CVQO), from which the cadets can gain a BTEC level 2 diploma in either Music or Public Service.

As part of the training programme there are opportunities throughout the year to participate in overnight exercises, courses and camps to enable cadets to put into practice what they have learnt. This includes our CCF Summer Camps for both the RN and Army Sections, which enables our cadets to build self-reliance, resourcefulness and endurance. These camps also offer the opportunity to experience and learn new skills through dinghy sailing and power boating activities in the RN Section, and adventurous activities in the Army Section. Cadets can also join our biennial adventurous training expedition – a self-sufficient nine-day hill walking and canoeing journey. In recent years, the expedition has taken our cadets to South Norway and Central Sweden, and continues to be a popular adventurous trip.

The Loretto CCF has a Pipes & Drums section which practises regularly, competes at national level, and represents the School at prestigious events.
