'I cannot emphasise enough the importance of raising awareness'.
'Many of you will know that the reason Loretto has done so much for the Brain Tumour Charity is because Libby's older brother, Duncan, died of a brain tumour in February last year. I only ever knew of Duncan through Libby, and as one of the “big kids” on the bus on the way to school, but for those that knew him well he was a talented golfer, rugby player, and mathematician who had an impish sense of humour. But, most pupils sitting in this chapel will have never had the privilege of knowing Duncan as a Lorettonian, and so I would like to highlight to you the importance of the money that we’ve raised, in addition to honouring Duncan’s memory.
I also lost a sibling, in that my sister, Verity, died of cancer back in 2009. My family, however, knew for a long time that she was going to die, as she suffered for most of her short life before passing away. My experience of losing a sibling is so different compared to what Libby has experienced, because in many ways we were prepared for the outcome. The thing about Duncan's death was that it was so unexpected, and the McLean family have been left with a hole that they couldn't possibly have ever envisaged. The sudden and malicious nature of Duncan’s tumour meant that he died within two days of its diagnosis.
But, the £5,000 that we have raised as a school will go on to promote research into brain tumours and awareness of their symptoms, so that in the future families will not have to go through what the McLeans have. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of raising awareness, as often understanding and coming forward with symptoms can have a much more profound impact than medicine can offer. The Duncan McLean Fund that has been established in Duncan’s memory aims to encourage better earlier diagnosis by GPs and much needed research into possible cures. I hope that the money that we have raised will contribute to these goals eventually being reached.
