Every pupil has the  opportunity to join a musical group and there is a wide range of musical opportunities available. Currently on offer are the Chapel Choir, Senior Choir, A Cappella Choir and Junior Choir. We also have  a large School Orchestra, Pipe Band, Brass Ensemble, String Ensemble. Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and various Rock Bands.

Music technology is available in the form of a popular  Music Technology and Film Club, the use of iPads and GarageBand, Logic Pro, ProTools and Sibelius during lessons. Music Technology is also an option at A level.

The musical calendar is broad and varied, and the department produces music for over 50 events a year, including Chapel Services, Music Drama productions, the Scholars’ Concert, SongFest, Inter-Colour Instrumental Competition, James Waterhouse Music competition, several evening concerts a year, informal lunch time concerts, Pinkie Sessions and social functions.

Recent Highlights include a performance of Carmina Burana with the Loretto Choral Society, workshops with Andrew Robb, Head of Jazz at St. Mary’s Music School, SongWriting Workshops with Rich Cottell, Baroque workshop and Concert with Ruth Slater.

Pupils enter and achieve success at  local and national competitions including the Edinburgh Competition Festival, Rotary Young Musician of the Year and James Waterhouse piano competition. Pupils take part in National ensembles, including NYCOGB, NYCOS and NYOS

The quality of music in chapel is outstanding and we are fortunate in having a very beautiful building housing an exceptional organ built by Kenneth Jones in 1988. Loretto has a tradition of singing hymns and anthems in harmony with the entire School. Individual performers, composers and groups frequently visit to give concerts and conduct masterclasses.
