Music Is A Very Big Part Of Life

Music plays a significant part in the life of Loretto Junior School and it all begins in the Early Years where our specialist early years music teacher lays the foundations in structured weekly class music lessons. We also run a popular ‘Saturday Morning Music School’ for Early Years aged children. This exciting initiative provides a range of fun musical activities, enabling children to explore four different blocks of music each week. Set into four rotating groups, the children enjoy the ‘Singing Space’, the ‘Recorder Room’ the ‘Fiddle Factory’ and the ‘Percussion Pad’ every week. They spend 30 minutes in each block before changing rooms to move on to the next block. Loretto provides all resources, including violins and recorders.

In year 4, children move to the ‘big music room’ for class music lessons, where they develop their singing skills, learn to play recorder and read staff notation, and involve themselves in other musical activities and performances. By year 4 most pupils have started learning a musical instrument with one of our 12 peripatetic music teachers. These include orchestral instruments, guitar, drum kit, snare drum and chanter/bagpipes.

The Nipper Choir is open to year 5-7 pupils and they participate in many concerts, trips and recordings throughout the year. There are several ensembles in development, including brass, flute, string and wind ensembles, as well as a junior pipe band and a small orchestra.

In class, the older children enjoy performing in ‘class bands’ adding guitars, basses, drums and keyboards to their armoury, learning keyboard, bass and drum kit in class. They also listen to a wide range of music and enjoy the challenge of composing.

All year 6 and 7 pupils get the chance to perform in our annual musical. They also listen to a wide range of music and enjoy the challenge of composing. The most recent shows have included Grease, Calamity Jane, The Sound of Music, Oliver, Annie, Little Shop of Horrors and Summer Holiday.
