Rotary Club Young Musician of the Year 2018.

The Musselburgh round of this annual competition took place on Tuesday 6 February in Loretto Concert Hall. The adjudicator was Gavin Pettinger.

Singers and instrumentalists from Loretto, Musselburgh Grammar and Mansfield School of Music took part.  There were seven entrants in the Junior category, including Elspeth on the piano, Timothy on trombone and singer Ogechi.  The category winner was singer Jamie from Musselburgh Grammar, with an entertaining and technically accomplished performance of “If only you would listen” from School of Rock.  Elspeth and Ogechi took second and third places respectively.

There were 11 entries at Senior level and this category was a clean sweep for the four Loretto candidates.  Laura on cello won the instrumental class, with the adjudicator commenting particularly on her excellent tone.  Medi on viola was placed second.  Lindsay won the vocal section with a fizzing rendition of “Popular” from Wicked and Patrin was placed second with a tasteful and moving performance of Poulenc’s “Priez pour Paix”, the only art-song in an evening dominated vocally by musical theatre.
