Rick Valentine - Director of Golf, PGA Fellow Professional, BSc (Hons), PGdip, UKCC Level 4
Rick was born in Dubai and raised in England where he pursued many sports before completing a BSc (hons) in Sports Science and Business Studies at Brunel University. After completing University he moved to the USA to attend the San Diego Golf Academy to work on his own
game, as well as achieving an Associate degree in Golf Complex Management and Golf Professional.

Rick moved to Hong Kong and pursued his amateur career for three years. He represented Hong Kong in the Eisenhower Trophy (WorldAmateur Team Championships), Namura Cup (Asia Pacific Team Championships) and Putra Cup (South East Asia Team Championships), as well as many other international events; he won the China Amateur in 2000 as well as being the leading amateur in the Hong Kong Open in 2001and 2002. On returning to the UK in 2003, Rick competed in the Qualifying School for the Euro Pro Tour; he won a card and turned professional.

Since joining Loretto Rick has become a member of the Professional Golfers Association completing the Foundation Degree through the University of Birmingham. In September 2014 he completed a Post Graduate diploma (PGDip) in Sports Coaching through the University of
Birmingham, and in September 2015 Rick was one of the first PGA professionals to be awarded the highly converted UKCC Level 4 coaching award. He has now started his MSc in Sports Coaching through the University of Birmingham and was made a Fellow Professional in January

In October 2014 Rick was appointed as National Competition Coach to the Scottish Women’s team. Within this role he works closely with the national players preparing them for National and International Tournaments to include the Home Internationals, European and World Championships.

Golf is in Rick’s blood as he shares the same passion and love for the game as his Grandmother, Jessie Valentine, who notched up a staggering 3 British Ladies Championships between 1937 and 1958 in addition to 6 Scottish Ladies Championship titles. Rick’s Great Grandfather was also
a professional and club maker in Perth, Scotland and father was Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Golf Association.


Lynsey Whitelaw - Golf Adminstrator

Lynsey Whitelaw joined the Loretto Golf Academy team in August 2015. Whilst working at Stirling Univer­sity she gained a wide and varied range of administra­tive skills. Lynsey has an HND in Interior Design from Forth Valley College.

Lynsey is also a qualified lifeguard, first aid trained and TEFL certified. In her free time, Lynsey is a keen golfer and was a member at Dunblane New Golf Club. She currently plays off 11 with the aim of reducing this to single figures. Her golfing achievements include competing in the club championship semi-finals and quarter-finals, winning Dunblane’s mixed open trophy twice, and making it to the SLGA quarter-finals.

Ryan Scott PGA Advanced Professional and Head of Golf Coaching - Ryan Scott
Having played at an elite amateur level, Ryan joined the Professional Golfers Association in 2004 as an Assistant Professional and successfully achieved his Degree in Professional Golf in July 2007. Since this time, he has coached at several venues across Scotland, and accumulated thousands of hours coaching golfers of many varying abilities, including Professional golfer’s competing on the Euro Pro & Challenge Tours. He was successfully awarded ’PGA Advanced Professional’ status in July 2014 by the British Professional Golfers Association (PGA) due primarily to his achievements and experiences in golf coaching and his commitment to continual professional learning.

As part of his coaching qualifications and professional development, Ryan completed the Golfing Machines Golf stroke Engineering Master’s (GSEB) qualification becoming one of only a handful of coaches in Scotland to have achieved this status. In addition, In September 2014, he completed a Post Graduate diploma (PGDip) in sports coaching at the University of Birmingham, as well as completing the new UKCC Level 3 qualification with the Professional Golfers Association. Ryan has now transferred onto a (MSc) in sports coaching and as of February 2015, will be starting coach education work for the PGA in Scotland as a Tutor & Assessor helping induct new coaches through the PGA Level 1 qualifications. He is also ClubGolf coach developer for the East Region of Scotland providing guidance and assistance to professional and volunteer coaches operating within Scottish Golf. Ryan is on track to become one of the first Level 4 UKCC golf coaches in the United Kingdom.
Scott Advanced PGA Professional - Scott Grieve

Introduced to the game at a young age Scott played amateur golf to a high level and he achieve a scratch handicap by the time he was 16. He turned professional in 2000 and worked at a number of leading clubs including Royal Wimbledon, Longniddry and Kings Acre. Scott was as an assistant professional at Kings Acre before he took on the position of Head Professional and then Head of Golf Operations at Turnhouse. Latterly Scott was the PGA Professional at Deer Park Golf and Country Club for American Golf.

Scott has always had a passion for coaching, working with players to help them develop their golf and ultimately assist them in reaching their goals. Scott has a wealth of coaching experience across all levels of the game to include junior coaching as well as adults all the way up to the professional players.

Always looking for ways to improve his knowledge, Scott has undertaking a wide range of continued professional development course around coaching and club management. These have included Trackman, CMAE Club Management and is in the final stages of his Director of Golf Qualification with the PGA.

Scott Smith PGA Professional - Scott Smith
Having studied golf for 3 years at Elmwood College Scott went on to gain his BSc in Performance Golf from The University of Abertay Dundee. After successfully playing golf at county and collegiate level Scott Turned Professional in 2012. This took him down the path of completing the Foundation degree in Professional Golf Studies which is run through The Professional Golfers Association and Birmingham University.

Having gained his UKCC Level 2 coaching certificate Scott has gone on to coach all types of golfers from complete beginner to elite. Scott has carried out coaching clinics at numerous schools throughout Fife while working at Scotscraig Golf Club along with participating in the Clubgolf summer camps which are held every year at local venues across Scotland.
Scott is also focused on improving his own continual professional development by engaging in coach education opportunities which will enhance the learning experience of golfers he works with. Scott is a certified US Kids level 1 instructor, and is looking to enhance further his coaching ability by enrolling in the UKCC Level 3 coaching certificate early next year. Scott is also in the process of doing a Biomechanics course.

Philip Calvert is a master trainer, tutor and assessor for Life Fitness Academy in the UK & Ireland. Life Fitness Academy provides internal and external educational and training services through a global network of highly-qualified personal trainers for Life Fitness, a division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC). He has more than 25 years’ experience in playing and coaching sports and fitness.
Phil specializes in Golf strength and flexibility, exercise management for lower back pain and nutrition and weight management. He has several qualifications through the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), the professional body for the health and fitness industry in the United Kingdom (UK). Along with certifications for lower back pain management, nutrition and weight loss, he holds certifications in TPI, advanced personal training, gym management. Phil has combined his knowledge of training for the development of golfers through training as a TPI instructor.
His areas of expertise include Golf strength and flexibility, sports-specific plyometric and endurance training. He has completed Continuing Professional Development courses for TRX® Suspension Training, Power Plate and Group Cycling instructing. He runs a successful personal training company in Edinburgh and has worked as a freelance personal trainer through Edinburgh Leisure, Energy Fitness, Greens Health & Fitness and LA Fitness. He also worked as a fitness coach for the Livingston Football Club (Scotland) before joining the Life Fitness Academy team,
Some of Phil’s sporting achievements include, cycling an 1100mile charity cycle in 10 days, completing a 70.3 Ironman and several Marathons including New York and Belfast.
Phil graduated from Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he was captain of the rugby team, with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management. He was educated at Campbell College Northern Ireland. Phil played for the Wastonians Rugby Football Club in Edinburgh from 1990 to 1996. His rugby-playing days also saw him selected to represent Scottish Colleges. He resides just outside of Edinburgh with his wife Karen and their young son Ruaridh.
