Rachael feels privileged to have been appointed Interim Senior Deputy Head for this academic year; and is excited to be working with the senior leadership team to drive the school forwards. Her key responsibilities extend to the day to day running of the school, deputising for the Head in his absence, coordinating whole school events, and upholding Loretto’s values and ethos.
Education is her lifeblood – returning from a teaching project in South Africa as a 21-year-old, she ditched her law conversion to embark on a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. Having read her first degree in English Literature at Edinburgh, fallen in love with all that the city had to offer, she lay down roots, worked in a number of schools to gain the experience and expertise to progress to faculty head in two secondary schools, at one point, concurrently, and work across the city to lead both curricular change and drive forward national priorities.
During the last 8 years at Loretto, Rachael has furthered her qualifications by gaining a post graduate diploma in Inclusive Education and moved into a pastoral role as Head of Year – a role that has given her huge satisfaction and reaffirmed the reason she chose Education as a career 20+ years ago – the impact on youngsters is still her guiding light and will govern all of her decisions as a senior leader this year.
Most of her spare time these days is spent chauffering her children around; walking her wonderful dogs – Jasper and Ludo – who facilitate permitted yelling at ungodly hours across desolate fields, and throwing herself into middle aged hobbies – John Lewis being the top one. She is, and will always remain, an avid reader, jigsaw puzzler and unashamed lover of scented candles.
