At Loretto Junior School, we love to sing! It’s one of the best things a young person can learn to do- it’s fun, healthy, inexpensive and a surefire way to make you feel cheerful. Singing strengthens our sense of community; it contributes to the happy atmosphere we all cherish and brings lifelong joy to each person.
It connects us in ways that words alone cannot, fostering a culture of positivity and kindness. The beauty of singing is that it has no barriers- it welcomes everyone, regardless of experience. Whether you are already confident or just starting out, all it takes is a deep breath and the courage to let your voice be heard.
Singing isn’t just about making music—it’s about well-being. It has been proven to release endorphins, lifting our spirits and reducing stress. For children, it provides an emotional outlet, helping them manage anxiety and build resilience. A school that sings together is one filled with joy and positivity.
Confidence grows through singing. Children who are shy or find communication challenging often discover their voice through song. Performing, even in a small setting, can help them feel more assured in themselves, which carries over into other aspects of their learning and social interactions.
Beyond individual growth, singing strengthens social bonds. When children sing together, they become a team, united by a shared rhythm and melody. Friendships form, inclusivity flourishes, and everyone feels like they belong. In a happy school, no child should feel left out. Singing helps to bridge gaps and create a supportive environment.
Music is such a powerful learning tool. Songs help children retain information, whether it’s times tables, historical events, or new vocabulary. The combination of melody and rhythm engages different areas of the brain, making learning more effective and enjoyable.
Singing encourages creativity too, allowing children to experiment with their voices and express emotions in a safe, supportive space. A school that embraces musical expression is one that nurtures imagination and lifelong artistic appreciation.
To truly harness the benefits of singing, it must become a natural part of daily school life. At Loretto, we weave singing into many parts of our day. Morning assemblies always include singing, setting a positive tone and energizing both pupils and staff.
In the classroom, music enhances learning across subjects; Maths, History, and Languages all come alive when paired with song. Lunchtime choirs provide additional opportunities for children to bond and enjoy music with other like-minded pupils. Concert performances and Chapel services bring our whole community together, fostering pride and a sense of achievement.
As well as being the Junior School Head, I am a professional musician, having taught Music in several schools before moving to Scotland. My passion has always been singing and choirs. I have always loved singing in choirs and, as a teacher, was fortunate to establish award-winning groups in my schools, helping young voices flourish at the highest levels.
Seeing pupils grow in confidence, work toward goals, and thrive in a supportive musical environment has been a constant source of joy. Leadership, creativity, performance, and teamwork are all nurtured through choral singing, and I incorporate that experience into everything I do at Loretto.
As a trustee for the awesome charities ‘Sing for Pleasure’ and ‘Morland Choristers’ Camp,’ I continue to share my expertise with the choral world through courses and training programmes. Scotland is also home to ‘NYCOS’, a flagship organisation that champions high expectations and professional standards in youth choral singing. As a result, we have excellent gateway opportunities for young people who love singing.
Perhaps there are future professional singers, musical theatre stars, choral leaders and conducting experts already here at Loretto, just waiting to be inspired!
Singing brings people together in ways few other activities can. In a choir, every individual voice plays a role in shaping the whole. It’s the ultimate example of teamwork—listening, reacting, blending, and uniting in pursuit of a shared goal.
Choirs don’t just build musical skills; they create communities, sharing their work with audiences and bringing joy to others. A school filled with singing is a school filled with happiness, connection, and enthusiasm for learning. Beyond the melodies, it nurtures confidence, creativity, and emotional resilience.
By making singing a joyful part of school life, we contribute to an environment where every child feels valued and inspired. Let’s all raise our voices—who knows what beautiful harmonies we will create together?
