Creating Exceptional Lives

Developing a Love of Sport

Great emphasis is placed on physical education at Loretto; we fully appreciate the valuable role that physical activity plays in the social, mental and physical wellbeing of our pupils.

PE Programme

Pupils take part in PE lessons every week to help them develop their core physical skills such as balance and strength. Swimming is also part of the compulsory curriculum for children aged 5 to 11. In addition, our younger pupils have sessions of ball skills to practice coordination and control, giving them more confidence in controlling their movements.

Team Sport

In games lessons, we teach and coach our major team sports. Sessions of rugby, hockey, netball and cricket start from Year 3 onwards, with specialist coaching and competitive experiences starting in Year 4. Fixtures are arranged at U10 level for Year 4 and 5 pupils, and U12 level for children in Years 6 and 7. Playing matches against other school teams is a highlight of the week for many pupils, come rain or shine, with match teas being a definite bonus at the end of the afternoon!

Coaching & Facilities

The PE and Games programmes are taught and coached by specialist staff. They work on both the Junior and Senior School sites, enabling children of all ages and stages to receive the very best instruction and encouragement. Members of academic staff are also fully involved, assisting with coaching and umpiring matches and supervising the children when they visit other schools. Progress is always celebrated and those who show particular aptitude are encouraged to develop their skills through involvement in local clubs.

We are able to use the whole range of our extensive facilities across the school campus. There are netball courts, an astroturf and cricket nets at the Junior School. We have extensive playing fields at Newfield and it is just a short walk to the Sports Hall, the Golf Academy and further netball courts, playing fields and cricket nets on the Senior School site. The distinctive blue astroturf is nicknamed the ‘Smurf Turf’ by our younger pupils!
