Whilst a truly Scottish school, the Loretto community is diverse, welcoming pupils of 28 different nationalities. This enables the expansion of all of our pupils’ cultural horizons and inspires them to harness the opportunities of our globalised world.
Our non-denominational status provides a relaxed environment allowing pupils from different cultures to fit in seamlessly and mix freely. Overseas pupils with specific cultural needs are catered for in the most appropriate and sensitive way.

This department plays an important role in supporting international students to enhance their English language proficiency and to access the general curriculum, through providing customised courses tailored to their individual needs. ESL supports students, aiding understanding of curriculum subjects and completion of prep and coursework tasks. ESL is an important part of the pastoral care provided at Loretto, often providing a first ‘port of call’ for overseas students to air any worries or concerns.
All international students, for whom English is a second language, attend International English Language Testing System (IELTS classes). This enables them to become fluent in English as quickly as possible which both boosts their confidence and enhances their studies. Students are prepared for the IELTS which is studied intensively over one year across three lessons per week in classes of just three to five students, rather than over two years which is more common elsewhere. This faster, more focused approach works well, freeing students up to concentrate on their A Levels during their final year, which in turn enables the majority of students to achieve the results required for entry into the very best British universities.
