Creating Exceptional Lives

Senior School

A typical day at Loretto Senior School begins with registration at 8.20am, although Boarders have breakfast together before then. The first event of the day is a check-in between Tutors and Tutees, where weekly one-to-ones are arranged, key pieces of information are passed on and personalised support is offered before lessons begin at 8.30am.

This is with the exception of a Wednesday, when our community gathers in the Chapel to listen to our Chaplain, reflect on the past week, plan for the week ahead and sing with great gusto (a tradition at Loretto).

There are seven, 50 minute lessons each day –  a broad academic offering of 18 GCSE and 24 A level subjects gives pupils the opportunity to discover their passion. Sport (“Games”) sessions have deliberately been built into the school day thereby meaning all pupils have the opportunity to be coached by experts from the Sports Department and Golf Academy.

The Senior School community comes together again on Mondays after class for Head’s Double (assembly), but once lessons are complete, day pupils are free to go home. That said, we hope they will make the most of the over 40 extra-curricular activities, academic workshops, play rehearsals, Combined Cadet Force (CCF), extra music practices and Conservation on offer.

All students are welcome to stay for supper (“tea”) before leaving for home or returning to House, a home away from home for Day Pupils and Boarders alike. Loretto is the first school in Scotland to offer Day Pupil, Flexi, Weekly and Full Boarding options thereby giving parents full scope to decide what best suits their family.

On Saturday mornings, representing Loretto in competitive sport is the focus. Those pupils from Form 3 to Upper Sixth not involved in sport are required to attend Saturday Enrichment between 9am and 12 noon. Once they have completed their school commitments, they are then free to depart for the weekend. Those staying in school for the weekend return to their Boarding House where an array of weekend activities are put on for them or they may simply choose to pop onto Musselburgh High Street (“Downtown”) for some shopping and relaxation.
