Creating Exceptional Lives

Why BTECs are Valued by Lorettonians

Over the past eight years, Loretto has offered a small number of BTEC qualifications alongside our wide offering of A Level subjects. Our rationale for doing so came from positive experiences with BTEC qualifications at schools in England, and a recognition that they offer a genuine alternative to A Levels in terms of the assessment process.

When A Levels became fully exam-based at the end of the Upper Sixth, we recognised that this did not suit all Lorettonians; some of whom preferred the previous A Level system that included more coursework, and the ability to take some exams earlier in the two-year cycle.

Considering these factors, BTECs were the logical addition to our Sixth Form academic programme. They offered continuous assessment, without the need for final examinations, and with part of the assessment taking place internally, similar to coursework. This practical approach makes BTECs an excellent choice for students who thrive in hands-on learning environments.

University Recognition and Global Opportunities

A growing number of higher education institutions recognised that BTECs provided students with valuable skills and knowledge applicable to specific fields. In the UK, most Russell Group institutions accept BTECs, especially when combined with A Levels.

This flexibility allows students to tailor their qualifications to their strengths, enhancing their applications and making them more competitive in the academic marketplace.

In the United States, a growing number of universities also recognise BTECs, particularly when paired with equivalent academic subjects (such as A Levels). This recognition creates opportunities for our students embarking on their higher education journeys across the Atlantic.

A frequently overlooked fact about BTEC qualifications is that, if taken as a Level 3 National Extended Certificate, they are equivalent to an A Level. Although the grading system is different from A Levels, BTEC qualifications carry equivalent UCAS points.

Student BTEC Success

Since 2019 (the first year of results), 59 of our Upper Sixth Form students (16% of the total) have taken one or more BTEC qualifications. In addition, four students have achieved a double BTEC qualification by pursuing a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport, which is equivalent to two A Level qualifications.

Overall, sixteen students have achieved two BTEC qualifications at Level 3, accompanied by a single A Level subject. The breakdown of all BTEC results is as follows:

These impressive results have contributed to 99% of our Upper Sixth students securing entry to either their first or second-choice University.

In offering both BTECs and A Levels, we embrace a holistic approach to education that respects and nurtures the varied pathways our students may choose. By providing these two distinct qualifications, we empower young learners to pursue their passions and realise their ambitions.

Expanding Our BTEC Offerings

Whether they aspire to enter the workforce directly, further their studies at university, or explore vocational training, our students are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

We are therefore delighted to announce that in addition to BTEC qualifications in Enterprise & Entrepreneurship and Sport, we will be introducing BTEC Applied Psychology from September 2025.

Ultimately, our commitment to offering BTECs and A Levels enriches our curriculum and supports our students’ aspirations, paving the way for their success in an increasingly competitive world.
