Loretto Celebrates Positive HMIE Report
Staff and pupils at Loretto, Scotland’s oldest boarding school, are celebrating the results of a recent Education Scotland inspection.
Loretto School, based in East Lothian, was inspected by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education in Scotland (HMIE) in March this year. The inspection team praised the school for its welcoming and nurturing environment, where children and young people are encouraged and supported to achieve and thrive. Further key strengths that were noted include:
- Children and young people’s engagement in activities and wider achievement throughout their time in the junior and the senior school is a major strength.
- The Head is a compassionate and highly effective leader. His ambition is for all children and young people to reach their full potential.
- Children and young people thrive in the warm and nurturing family ethos of the school. They are articulate, polite, hardworking and very welcoming to visitors. They demonstrate well the school values of kindness, integrity, loyalty and tenacity in their day to-day interactions with each other.

The report recognises our exceptional educational standards, quality of care, and welcoming, warm and friendly school environment where children are nurtured and supported to thrive.
“The team of inspectors from Education Scotland conducted a thorough review of the school, while also speaking to current pupils, parents and teachers to gain personal insights into the school experience today. These findings are testament to the commitment of the entire school community to making Loretto the thriving environment it is today.”
The report also mentions that almost all children in Junior School achieve or exceed national standards in literacy and numeracy, while in the Senior School, for both GCSEs and A-Level qualifications, young people’s progress is notably higher than national averages.
Loretto was marked ‘very good’ across three key indicators – leadership of change, ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion and raising attainment and achievement – and marked ‘good’ for learning teaching and assessment.
