Loretto’s Festive Fundraising Supports Local Educational Charity

Loretto School is proud to announce that it has raised over £700 to support the Edinburgh-based Ukrainian St Margaret’s Saturday School, following its festive charity collections during the end-of-term carol services.

The generous contributions from parents, staff, and students enabled the Loretto community to make a meaningful impact on the work of this vital charity, which provides additional educational support for Ukrainian children and young people in Edinburgh.

Loretto hosts a collection at its three carol concerts each year to support a local charitable initiative. This year, Head of Loretto School, Pete Richardson, was delighted to designate Ukrainian St Margaret’s Saturday School as the recipient of the school’s charitable giving:

“We are thrilled to support Ukrainian St Margaret’s Saturday School in its important mission,” said Mr. Richardson. “Education is a powerful tool for healing and hope, and it is a privilege to contribute to the future of these children. The resilience of the Ukrainian children, their teachers, and their families is truly inspiring, and we are proud to stand with them in their journey.”

In a letter of thanks to Loretto School, the charity expressed its deep appreciation for the £711.84 donation and outlined the impact it would have on their work:

“This donation is very timely and will ensure that the Ukrainian St Margaret’s Saturday School has sufficient funds to keep the school going through to June 2025 and prepare for a third year. Ukrainian children need a sound education to give them confidence and hope for the future.

Many of them have lost family members in the dreadful war in Ukraine, but the children, aged 5 to 17, are resilient and are doing well in rebuilding their lives. The Ukrainian teachers, parents and children join us in asking you to pass on our deep thanks to everyone in the Loretto School community for their support.”

Founded in 2023, the Ukrainian St Margaret’s Saturday School operates within Edinburgh’s George Heriot’s School, welcoming around 30 pupils weekly. The school offers a range of subjects, including Maths, Business, and English Language, alongside Ukrainian cultural education.

Qualified teachers teach classes in both English and Ukrainian, ensuring that students receive comprehensive support as they continue their studies.

The school’s vision is to raise educational standards for Ukrainian students living in Edinburgh, helping them build confidence, develop social skills, and gain the knowledge they need to thrive in their new environment.
