Minor Sports

Athletics

Athletics is the central focus of PE in the summer at both Junior and Senior School. It is also an option in the summer term with all 2nd, 3rd and 4th Form girls having one games session of athletics per week.

Loretto enters athletes in the Scottish Schools Athletics Championships and competes at U13 level against other schools. Talented and committed athletes are encouraged to join local clubs with whom the school has strong links.

Both Junior and Senior Schools hold a Sports Day in the summer term providing the opportunity for intramural competition.

Dance

Highland, Hip Hop, Ballet and a range of other styles are on offer for all ages and stages and growing in popularity.  The Highland Dancers often accompany the Pipes & Drums to major events and appeared on the Scotland’s Got Talent stage in Princes Street Gardens at last year’s Edinburgh Festival. There are two Hip Hop dance shows each year. We welcome Kirsty Hamilton who offers regular classes in Ballet and other styles, and Fiona Henderson for Highland Dance. 

Fives

Loretto has a strong tradition in this sport. Previous players have been British Champions in both Singles and Doubles at U16 and Open Schools’ levels. Skill development is overseen by one of the few Level 2 Coaches in the UK. Practice sessions take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and are open to all years, all standards and both boys and girls. Very few pupils have played this sport before they arrive at Loretto and there is a tradition of the better players coaching and, indeed, playing with the less experienced.

Swimming

Loretto has access to Musselburgh’s local pool, providing the opportunity for competitive swimming training with a qualified coach and recreational swimming.  Swimming forms an integral part of the PE curriculum from Year 1 in the Junior School through to Fifth Form in the Senior School and is a minor sport option in the games programme.  Loretto has excellent links with local clubs and many pupils train regularly and compete to a high level (including National) as a result of these links.
