Creating Exceptional Lives

English as a Second Language

The role of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Department is to improve English language skills to allow overseas students to access the general curriculum by tailoring courses to meet their needs. The department supports students in their curricular subjects, particularly those that use subject-specific vocabulary and also helps the students in the completion of prep and/ or coursework tasks. The ESL department often provides a ‘first port of call’ for overseas students to air any worries or concerns.

Form 2 and Form 3

Though we have a course book, much of the additional material is bespoke and involves Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), in-house extension materials, project work and presentations.

IGCSE: (International GCSE)

This is a two-year course, though it is possible to join the course in the second year and take the IGCSE ESL examination. The course focuses on developing further all of the language skills to support pupils in their other GCSEs. Focus is placed on the enhancement of reading and writing skills through vocabulary and grammar enrichment. The development of listening and speaking skills is encouraged through projects and presentations.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Lower Sixth students prepare for this qualification over a year. Throughout the year, the four language skills improve dramatically due to the small class sizes and these skills transfer easily to other A-Level subjects. Most sit the IELTS exam in June.
